    A veteran of the Battle of Châteauguay

    Lower Canada was the southern part of what is today the province of Québec.

    During the War of 1812, three types of militia corps helped the British Army regular soldiers defend the province: the Sedentary Militia, the Select Embodied Militia, and volunteer corps such as the Canadian Voltigeurs. All men from 16 to 50 years of age were required to take part in the Sedentary Militia, or local militia.

    In May 1812, on orders from Sir George Prevost, these militiamen drew lots to form the Select Embodied Militia, a conscripted force of 2,000 men deployed wherever needed in the province.
