Wendi Deng was born in Jinan, Shandong, and raised in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. Her birth name was Wen'ge Deng, (邓文革),[2] meaning "Cultural Revolution".[3][4] She has two older sisters, and a brother,[5] and both of her parents were engineers.[6] When she was a teen she changed her given name to "Wendi".[7][2][8]
